Root canal treatment in Leeds

Root canal in Leeds

Endodontics, more commonly known as root canal treatment, is normally required when the pulp deep inside the centre of a tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels, becomes infected or inflamed through serious decay or injury. If the infection is allowed to spread it can lead to the development of a very painful abscess - a pus-filled swelling - and can go on to affect your gums and the tissues and bones that support your teeth. Without treatment the pulp will die and result in the loss of the affected tooth.

Root canal treatment involves careful removal of the infected pulp tissue from the damaged tooth, and is the first step in saving the tooth from extraction and prevents infection from spreading. Using local anaesthetic and special endodontic instruments the pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth carefully cleaned and sterilised to remove any remaining bacteria. The empty root canal is then filled with a special substance called gutta-percha and permanently sealed. Finally the tooth is restored to it natural shape and function with either a restoration or dental crown.

Does root canal treatment hurt?

Many people still believe that root canal treatment is long and painful, but using the latest endodontic equipment and materials it is no more uncomfortable or lengthy than having a routine filling and is usually completed in just one or two appointments, depending on your own particular circumstances. Any slight discomfort 24 - 48 hours after the procedure can be relieved with readily available painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.
